Society Meetings and Special Events

Das Haus and the Historical Society of North German Settlements in Western New York host many events throughout the year. These events often focus on local history and cover a wide range of interesting topics. Some examples of past meetings and presentations include:

  • The history of commercial establishments in Martinsville, NY.
  • The collapse of the Schoelkopf Power Plant in Niagara Falls, NY.
  • Several “Plattdeutsch” (Low German) luncheons are held, where the regional dialect is spoken and translated for guests who don’t speak German.
  • A lesson on how to bake Springerle—delicious holiday cookies.
  • Talks about family trees or personal memories shared by some of our longtime society members.

The society also hosts an annual dinner with a guest speaker. In the past, we’ve served meals based on recipes from the 1500s, using the kinds of food people ate back then and serving it in “removes”—course change by swapping dishes. One year, our special guest was Martin Luther—or an actor portraying him—who shared stories about life in medieval Germany.

The dates and times for our society meetings and annual dinners are announced in local newspapers and posted in public places. For details about upcoming meetings or events, please call 716-795-2890 or send us an email at dashausmuseum@gmail.com.
